Emerging Market Discovery

Primarily through continuous dialog with the market, identified significant emerging market opportunities early in their life cycle. My discussions with Pacific Bell management starting in 1995 opened the door to NEC in this market area early. The opportunity turned into a joint procurement consortium (JPC) initiative including Pacific Bell, SBC, and Bell South and involved a high-profile RFI/RFP/Deployment for DSL equipment.

Another case was for the ATM Passive Optical Networking (PON) market. Validated PON technology to SBC through installation of first such system at SBC TRI (SBC Labs) in Austin. Led NEC America into a new Fiber to the Premise (FTTP) market area by cultivating requirements from SBC and received Creativity Award as a result. Facilitated dozens of highly detailed technical meetings with SBC TRI and NEC engineers for the purpose of collaborating on requirements.

A third case involved the nascent technologies being pioneered at First Pacific Networks in the mid 1990s.  In the case of Demand Response (DR), just now we are seeing some applications moving beyond simple Smart Meters into the DR realm.  Cable modem and voice telephony have matured more quickly and together have enabled the cable companies to compete head-on with the incumbent telephone company for triple play bundled business for several years already.  As a System Engineer at FPN, I facilitated, consulted, engineered, and verified projects deploying these new applications.
